The Perfect Dream Home
Dear Homeowner,
Building projects can add value to your property, repair problems or make your home more enjoyable. But you need to be prepared for the things a building project can not do. Whether it's new construction or a home remodel, if you're not sure of what to expect from a construction project - I can promise you that these three things will occur:
(1) You will not get exactly what you want
(2) It will not be cheap
(3) Your house will not be perfect
Building projects can add value to your property, repair problems or make your home more enjoyable. But you need to be prepared for the things a building project can not do. Whether it's new construction or a home remodel, if you're not sure of what to expect from a construction project - I can promise you that these three things will occur:

We are not capable of perfection and can only promise you: quality materials, competent employees, experienced sub-contractors, accurate scheduling and responsible business practices. We don't build "Dream Homes". The fantasy home (seen in magazines, Internet articles and Television shows) looks so perfect; a compelling illusion of the easy, fun building project. What could possibly go wrong ?
As an example, last year, I was contacted by a homeowner planning to build near the beach. After reviewing the blueprints, I refused to bid the job. As I explained to the homeowner, there were several problem areas that could lead to building failure (water damage) in the future. They found another contractor, but were the plans redrawn to fix the problems ? If you are determined to build a certain design, because you must get exactly what you want (even if it's wrong) - find someone else.
I was recently asked for a cost estimate on a commercial building with damaged siding. After looking at the structure, it was obvious that some of the framing (with dry-rot) needed to be replaced. This was not in their budget; they hired another contractor who sided over the dry-rot, pretending it was not there. I will not do work like this. If I'm going to work on a building, I'm going to do it the right way. There are builders, in this area, who either don't know what they are doing or don't care. ("stainless nails are too expensive" - actual quote from local builder) If you want cheap - find someone else.
Perhaps, you are considering hiring a certain Contractor: because he has a more "positive" approach to the job, because he doesn't question Architects' design and material choices, because he is cheap, because his promises are so believable. We won't give you unrealistic promises and we can't give you perfection. If that is what you expect - find someone else. If you want a good builder, call me, and we can discuss your future building plans.
Sincerely,
The Bandon Coos Bay Builder
